The Frugal Gourmet's Southern Barbecue Sauce

Backyard Style Barbecue Ribs

There's nothing quite like the smell of barbecued ribs cooking in the backyard on a summer day. The smoky flavor, the tender meat, and the crispy skin are all irresistible. And making barbecued ribs at home is easier than you might think.

This recipe for backyard style barbecued ribs is simple to follow and produces ribs that are fall-off-the-bone tender and full of flavor. The ribs are first marinated in a mixture of bbq sauce, apple cider vinegar, and spices. Then, they are cooked slowly over indirect heat until they are cooked through. Finally, they are brushed with a sweet and sticky bbq sauce and cooked until the sauce is caramelized.

Ingredients:

  • 2 racks pork baby back ribs, about 2 pounds each

  • 1 cup bbq sauce

  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup honey

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your grill to indirect heat, about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the bbq sauce, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

  3. Add the ribs to the bowl and toss to coat.

  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.

  5. When you're ready to cook, remove the ribs from the refrigerator and let them come to room temperature for about 30 minutes.

  6. Place the ribs on the grill, meat side down, and cook for 2 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulls away from the bone.

  7. Brush the ribs with the brown sugar and honey mixture and cook for an additional 30 minutes, or until the sauce is caramelized and the ribs are cooked through.

  8. Remove the ribs from the grill and let them rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, you can add a few chunks of wood to the fire when you're cooking the ribs. This will add a smoky flavor to the ribs.

  • If you don't have a grill, you can cook the ribs in the oven. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and cook the ribs for 2 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulls away from the bone.

  • Serve the ribs with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, potato salad, or baked beans.

Enjoy!
