Burek or Feta Cheese Phyllo Pie



Burek is a delicious and versatile dish that can be made with a variety of fillings. The most common filling is feta cheese, but you can also use spinach, meat, or vegetables. Burek is a popular dish in the Balkans, and it can be found in many different variations.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough, thawed

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  • 1 pound feta cheese, crumbled

  • 1/2 cup chopped onion

  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

  2. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  3. In a large bowl, combine feta cheese, onion, bell pepper, parsley, salt, and pepper.

  4. Spread 1 tablespoon olive oil in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

  5. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the prepared baking dish.

  6. Spread 1/4 of the feta cheese mixture over the phyllo dough.

  7. Repeat layers, ending with a sheet of phyllo dough.

  8. Brush the top layer of phyllo dough with olive oil.

  9. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

  10. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • For a crispier burek, brush the top layer of phyllo dough with beaten egg.

  • To make ahead, prepare the burek up to step 8 and then cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
