Da Best Chicago Style Italian Beef

Chicago-style Italian beef is a delicious and hearty sandwich that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is made with thinly sliced beef, peppers, onions, and a flavorful gravy. The sandwich is then served on a hoagie roll and is often topped with giardiniera.

This recipe is for a basic Chicago-style Italian beef, but you can add your favorite toppings, such as provolone cheese, hot peppers, or a side of fries.

Ingredients

  • 1 (3-pound) boneless chuck roast, trimmed

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can beef broth

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

  • Hoagie rolls, for serving

  • Your favorite toppings, such as provolone cheese, hot peppers, or a side of fries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides.

  3. Add the onion and garlic to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  4. Add the tomato sauce, beef broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, or until the beef is tender.

  5. Remove the beef from the pot and shred it with two forks. Return the shredded beef to the pot and stir in the parsley.

  6. Warm the hoagie rolls.

  7. To assemble the sandwiches, place a hoagie roll on a plate and top with the Italian beef, peppers, onions, and your favorite toppings.

  8. Serve immediately.

Tips

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth.

  • To make ahead, prepare the beef and gravy as directed and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, reheat the beef and gravy in a pot over medium heat until heated through.

  • To make the sandwich vegan, use vegetable broth and vegan cheese.

Here is a story about how I came up with the Da Best Chicago Style Italian Beef recipe:

I was first introduced to Chicago-style Italian beef when I was visiting my friend in Chicago. We went to a local sandwich shop and I ordered an Italian beef sandwich. I was immediately hooked! The sandwich was so flavorful and the beef was so tender. I knew I had to try to make it at home.

I did some research and found a few different recipes. I tried a few different variations and finally came up with a recipe that I loved. This is my go-to recipe for Chicago-style Italian beef and it always turns out perfect!

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
