Don't Bother with the Canned Stuff: Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a classic American dish that is perfect for a casual meal. They are made with ground beef, onions, tomatoes, and spices, and they are served on hamburger buns. While there are many canned sloppy joe mixes available, I believe that making your own sloppy joes from scratch is the best way to go.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes

  • 1 (10 ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.

  2. Add the onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.

  4. Serve on hamburger buns.

Tips

  • For a spicier sloppy joe, add more chili powder or cayenne pepper.

  • For a creamier sloppy joe, add a dollop of sour cream or mayonnaise to each sandwich.

  • You can also add other ingredients to the sloppy joes, such as chopped bacon, cheese, or pickles.

Here is a story about how I came up with the Don't Bother with the Canned Stuff: Sloppy Joes recipe:

I grew up eating canned sloppy joes, and I thought they were delicious. But when I got older, I started to experiment with making my own sloppy joes from scratch. I was surprised at how much better they tasted! The homemade sloppy joes were more flavorful and had a thicker, more satisfying sauce.

I've been making my own sloppy joes ever since, and I've never looked back. They're so easy to make, and they're always a hit with my family and friends.

If you're looking for a delicious and easy-to-make meal, I highly recommend making your own sloppy joes from scratch. They're sure to become a new favorite!

Here are some additional tips and tricks for making a great sloppy joe:

  • Use high-quality ground beef. The better the beef, the better the sloppy joe will taste.

  • Don't overcook the beef. The beef should be browned, but it should not be dry.

  • Don't overcook the sauce. The sauce should be simmered until thickened, but it should not be boiled.

  • Serve the sloppy joes on toasted hamburger buns.

  • Enjoy!
