Low-Fat Sausage and Gravy

Sausage and gravy is a classic comfort food, but it can be high in fat and calories. This recipe for low-fat sausage and gravy is a healthier option that still tastes great.

I used ground turkey sausage in this recipe, which is lower in fat than pork sausage. I also used skim milk instead of whole milk, and I used a small amount of butter instead of a lot of oil.

The result is a delicious and satisfying sausage and gravy that is only 250 calories per serving. That's half the calories of a traditional sausage and gravy recipe!

Here is the recipe for low-fat sausage and gravy:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground turkey sausage

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 3 cups skim milk

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground turkey sausage over medium heat.

  2. Drain off any excess fat from the sausage.

  3. Melt the butter in the same skillet over medium heat.

  4. Whisk in the flour until smooth.

  5. Slowly whisk in the milk until the gravy thickens.

  6. Stir in the salt and pepper.

  7. Serve immediately over biscuits or toast.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, you can use whole milk instead of skim milk.

  • You can also add 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese to the gravy for a cheesy twist.

  • If you want to make the gravy ahead of time, you can do so up to the point of adding the milk. Then, let the gravy cool completely and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When you're ready to serve, reheat the gravy over low heat until it's warmed through.

Enjoy!

Here are some additional tips and tricks for making low-fat sausage and gravy:

  • Use ground turkey sausage instead of pork sausage. Ground turkey is lower in fat and calories than pork sausage.

  • Use skim milk instead of whole milk. Skim milk is lower in fat and calories than whole milk.

  • Use a small amount of butter instead of a lot of oil. Butter adds flavor, but it's also high in fat. Use a small amount of butter to brown the sausage and then whisk in the flour.

  • Don't overcook the gravy. The gravy will thicken as it cooks, so don't overcook it or it will become too thick.

  • Serve the gravy immediately over biscuits or toast.

With these tips, you can make a delicious and satisfying low-fat sausage and gravy that everyone will love.
