The Frugal Gourmet's Southern Barbecue Sauce

My Favorite Chinese Steamed Whole Fish

Steamed whole fish is a classic Chinese dish that is simple to make but delicious. The fish is steamed until it is cooked through and flaky, and it is then served with a simple sauce made with soy sauce, ginger, and scallions. This dish is a great way to showcase the fresh flavor of the fish, and it is perfect for a weeknight meal or a special occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole fish, about 1-2 pounds

  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon of ginger, grated

  • 2 scallions, chopped

  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the fish inside and out with cold water. Pat it dry with a paper towel.

  2. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, ginger, scallions, sesame oil, salt, and pepper.

  3. Rub the mixture all over the fish, inside and out.

  4. Place the fish in a steamer basket.

  5. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Place the steamer basket in the pot and steam the fish for 10-12 minutes, or until it is cooked through.

  6. Remove the fish from the steamer and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

  • For a more flavorful fish, you can marinate it in the soy sauce mixture for 30 minutes to 1 hour before steaming.

  • If you don't have a steamer, you can steam the fish in a baking dish. Fill the baking dish with about 1 inch of water and place the fish in the dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.

  • Serve the fish with a simple dipping sauce made with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.

Enjoy!

Here's a story about how I came to love steamed whole fish:

I grew up eating steamed whole fish, and it is one of my favorite dishes. My mom would always make it for special occasions, and I loved the way the fish was so fresh and flavorful. When I moved out on my own, I started making steamed whole fish for myself, and I quickly realized how easy it is to make. Now, I make it at least once a week, and it is always a hit with my family and friends.

I love the way the fish is so simple, yet so flavorful. The soy sauce, ginger, and scallions add a delicious umami flavor to the fish, and the sesame oil gives it a nice nutty finish. The fish is also very healthy, and it is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

If you are looking for a delicious and healthy dish to make, I highly recommend trying steamed whole fish. It is simple to make and can be customized to your liking. I promise you will not be disappointed!
