The Frugal Gourmet's Southern Barbecue Sauce

Crabby Bread

I'm a big fan of seafood, and I love finding new and creative ways to incorporate it into my meals. One of my favorite ways to do this is with crabby bread. Crabby bread is a simple dish, but it's packed with flavor. It's made with a basic bread dough that's filled with crab meat, cheese, and seasonings. The bread is then baked until it's golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Crabby bread is a great appetizer or snack, and it can also be served as a light lunch or dinner. It's especially popular during the summer months, when fresh crab is in season.

Here's my recipe for crabby bread:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water (105°F-115°F)

  • 1 package active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing the bowl

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the work surface

  • 1 pound crab meat, picked over

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.

  2. Stir in the salt, olive oil, and 2 cups of the flour. Beat until the dough comes together.

  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic.

  4. Grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat all sides in oil.

  5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with olive oil.

  7. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12x10 inch rectangle.

  8. Spread the dough with the mayonnaise, then sprinkle with the crab meat, cheese, and parsley.

  9. Roll the dough up lengthwise and cut into 1-inch slices.

  10. Place the slices in the prepared baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  11. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips:

  • If you don't have fresh crab, you can use canned crab meat. Just be sure to drain the crab meat well before using it.

  • You can use any type of cheese you like in this recipe. I like to use cheddar cheese, but you could also use Monterey Jack, Swiss, or even a combination of cheeses.

  • If you want to add a little heat to your crabby bread, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mayonnaise mixture.

  • Crabby bread is best served fresh, but it can also be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

I hope you enjoy this recipe for crabby bread! It's a delicious and easy-to-make dish that's perfect for any occasion. So next time you're looking for a seafood-inspired snack or meal, give this recipe a try!
