The Frugal Gourmet's Southern Barbecue Sauce

Philadelphia Roll Sushi

I love sushi. It's such a delicious and versatile dish, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to fillings. But sometimes, I want something a little more substantial than just a basic roll. That's where the Philadelphia Roll comes in. It's the perfect combination of creamy avocado, savory smoked salmon, and rich cream cheese. It's also a great option for people who are new to sushi, as it's not too fishy.

This roll is made with a simple base of sushi rice, but it's really the fillings that make it special. I like to use fresh, high-quality ingredients, and I always make sure to season the rice properly. But feel free to get creative with your fillings. You could also add cucumber, avocado, or even some cooked shrimp.

This roll is perfect for parties, potlucks, or just a casual snack. It's easy to make and it's sure to please everyone. So next time you're looking for a delicious and fun sushi roll, give the Philadelphia Roll a try. You won't be disappointed.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice

  • ¼ cup seasoned rice vinegar

  • 4 sheets nori seaweed

  • 4 ounces smoked salmon, thinly sliced

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced

  • 1 avocado, thinly sliced

  • Sesame seeds, for topping

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the sushi rice according to the package directions.

  2. While the rice is cooking, combine the rice vinegar and 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl. Set aside.

  3. Once the rice is cooked, spread it out on a baking sheet to cool slightly.

  4. Place a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo rolling mat.

  5. Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the bottom.

  6. Arrange the smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, and avocado in a horizontal row across the center of the rice.

  7. Starting at the bottom, roll the nori up tightly.

  8. Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into 8 pieces.

  9. Serve immediately with sesame seeds on top.

Tips:

  • For a smoother roll, make sure the rice is cooked properly and that it's not too sticky.

  • If the rice is too sticky, it will be difficult to roll.

  • To prevent the rice from sticking to the bamboo rolling mat, lightly moisten the mat with water.

  • If you don't have a bamboo rolling mat, you can use a regular cutting board.

  • To make the roll easier to cut, dip the knife in water before each cut.

  • Serve the Philadelphia Roll with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
